Neuromuscular Reaction of Trunk and Lower Limbs in Older Tai Chi and Jogging Practitioners during Lateral Postural Contorl

چکیده
This study examined the effects of regular practice of Tai Chi and jogging on neuromuscular reaction indicated by muscle latency of the trunk and lower limb muscles on the unperturbated side in older people during lateral postural perturbation. A total of 42 people aged 65 or older participated in this study, and formed Tai Chi group, jogging group, and sedentary control group based on their exercise habits. Surface electromyography (EMG) data were collected at peroneus longus, tibialis anterior, gluteus medius, and erector spinae on the unperturbated side during the lateral perturbation. The results showed that control group showed significantly longer muscle latency of the erector spinae than those of the Tai Chi and jogging group. Tai Chi group also showed shorter muscle latency of the tibialis anterior than the control group. The results of this study indicated that regular practice of Tai Chi benefits neuromuscular reaction of these muscles to lateral postural perturbation in the elderly people.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of regular Tai Chi (TC) exercise on neuromuscular reaction in old people. 21 old TC practitioners with regular practicing TC for more than 4 year and 22 sedentary non-practitioners were recruited to respectively form the TC group and sedentary control group. Electromyography (EMG) was used to detect the neuromuscular reaction of the leg m...

متن کاملThe Effects of Tai Chi Training on the Cardiovascular Health and Postural Control of Older Adults—a Mind- Body Perspective
Aging is a worldwide phenomenon which causes health, social and economic problems. Healthy aging has been the focus of many scholarly investigations, particularly with regard to cardiovascular disease and postural control problems causing falls. Arterial compliance is an index reflecting artery function, and it is closely related to cardiovascular health. Decreased arterial compliance is associ...
متن کاملEffect of Textured Foot Orthoses on the Ground Reaction Force Components in the Older Adults During Walking
Introduction: With aging, the pattern of walking is altered, and the person’s ability to walk will be decreased. Also, with the beginning of the aging process, the coordination of the postural control system was disturbed and lead to an unstable condition. A small biomechanical change in the lower limb is significant on postural control. The use of textured foot orthoses leads to improved effic...
